An Ottoman Metal Threaded Embroidered Suzani Velvet Square Panel, 19th Century.
Approximately 89 x 89cm
The panel is crafted from rich, deep burgundy velvet, which serves as an opulent backdrop for the intricate gold and silver metal thread embroidery. The design is characteristic of high-quality Ottoman textiles, featuring lavish floral and scroll motifs arranged symmetrically across the square fabric.
The central medallion is intricately embroidered with golden floral motifs that radiate outward, creating a sense of harmony and balance. Surrounding the central design are ornate corner embellishments, consisting of scrolling vines and stylized flowers, which further enhance the elegance of the piece. The delicate use of metal threads gives the panel a shimmering effect, highlighting the craftsmanship and luxurious materials used.
Suzani, traditionally a form of needlework from Central Asia, was adopted and adapted by the Ottomans, who infused it with their distinctive artistic sensibilities. This panel would have been used as a decorative piece, possibly adorning walls, furniture, or as part of ceremonial attire in an Ottoman palace or an affluent household.
